The is a very fine early Medical textbook written by famous teacher and microscopist from the Univ. of London with an Appendix Done by Francis Gurney Smith, MD Med. Dept. Penn containing Applications of the Microscope to Clinical Medicine and Illustrated by 434 wood engravings. Amazing!

By 1874 along with Harvard with Oliver Wendell Holmes, Univ of Pennsylvania School of Medicine was considered finest in Microscopy in USA. It seems reasonable that this text contributed in a positive way.

Published by Blanchard and Lea, Philadelphia, 1856, First edition SCARCE.

Used brown cloth hardbound with title Carpenter and the Microscope on spine 6.5"x9", 724pp &32 pp of ads in rear.

Condition: Good with bumped edges and some loss of top and bottom of spine. Some browning and a little foxing with owner name written in frontise, and another on bookplate in frontise and stamp from Opticians office in Philadelphia( see picture).
