Silas Marner by George Eliot, 1953 Illustrated by Lynton Lamb
What a beaufifully designed book, both the outside of book and the inside papers in front and back ( see photos) look earthy like the novel and like fabric. Wonderful!
Silas Marner was first published in 1880 and by 1895 both book and author were visitired with a curse which they have not yet succeeded in shrugging off; Silas Marner was made required reading in American secondary schools. I read and enjoyed it my sophmore year in the stone ages of 1960. But what I don't understand, but maybe my classmates can correct me, why did our female instructor never mention that Eliot was female?
